Malda, May 17: Seven members of a gang doing business in stolen mobile handsets were arrested here this morning and 135 cellphones were recovered from them.
According to the inspector-in-charge of Englishbazar police station, Bipul Majumdar, of the 135 handsets that were seized, 107 were new and the rest were used.
“We had information that the group would be in town in a Jharkhand registered vehicle and they were going to sell the stolen goods to a person named Raja Dey,” said Majumdar.
Around 11am, the vehicle was spotted at Hyderpur, near here, where the six gang members had come to meet Raja. Soon the seven men were arrested from a nearby den where they were sitting.
While Siddhartha Yadav, Suraj Kumar, Dhiv Kumar, and Biru Prasad are from Asansol, Raja Dey and Jullur Sheikh are from Malda and Sujit Nania is a resident of Jharkhand.
According to the district superintendent of police, Bhuban Mondol, the handsets had been stolen from a shop in Rabindranagar in South 24-Parganas.
“A team from Rabindranagar police station is coming here to verify whether the sets were stolen from a shop there on Friday,” he said.
“This is an inter-state gang that is operating and we are interrogating them. Jharkhand police have also been contacted. We also suspect that the SUV they were travelling in was stolen,” said Mondol.
