Darjeeling, May 23: Two days after the murder of ABGL president Madan Tamang, police fear that the main accused, all members of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha’s frontal organisations, have taken shelter in neighbouring Sikkim.

K.L. Tamta, the inspector-general of police, north Bengal, said: “We believe that the six named in the FIR for being directly involved in the murder have crossed over to Sikkim.

I have spoken to the police officials in Sikkim and joint raids will be conducted along the border areas.”

The six named in the FIR lodged by ABGL general secretary Laxman  Pradhan are Alokkant Mani Thulung, Puran Thami (youth wing leaders), Kismat Chhetri and Keshav Raj Pokhral (student leaders), Tenzing Khambachay and Dinesh Gurung (both town committee members).

Seven others, including Morcha chief Bimal Gurung, have also been named in the FIR for indulging in criminal conspiracy.

However, the police arrested Sangay Tshering Bhutia, president of the Janmukti Hotel Owners’ Association, from Kurseong last night. Bhutia was named in an FIR lodged by Dawa Sherpa, state secretary of the BJP, for vandalising his hotel-cum-residence on Gandhi Road on Friday.

Bhutia, who was released today on bail by the Darjeeling judicial magistrate, has been asked to report at the local police station once a week.

While peace marches with lighted candles continued today, Anmole  Prasad, a Kalimpong-based lawyer and Morcha spokesperson for the first three rounds of tripartite talks between the party, Centre and the state, said he “would no longer be attached to the Morcha” after the “heinous and inconsolable murder of Madan Tamang”.

Morcha spokesperson Harka Bahadur Chhetri, too, said if anyone from the outfit was implicated in the murder, he would quit the party.

Sukman Moktan, secretary general of the Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh, an apolitical organisation with a pan-Indian reach, today demanded that “all private armies and forces be banned”.

He was referring to the Gorkhaland Personnel, a voluntary force raised by the Morcha.

The CPRM also has a “force”, the Sawamsevak Bahini.

“Political parties in the hills have private armies and forces. These must be banned immediately. We also demand a CBI inquiry into the killing,” said Moktan.

The Morcha has appealed to hill residents to keep their business establishments shut for a day in Darjeeling tomorrow as a mark of respect to Tamang.

The ABGL leader’s funeral will take place in Meghma, 35km from Darjeeling, tomorrow.

‘Boy’ who delivered the killer blow

FROM THE TELEGRAPH
AS TOLD TO … VIVEK CHHETRI, IN DARJEELING

A “boy” in a white T-shirt had delivered the killer blow, driving a sharp weapon into Madan Tamang, says Laxman Pradhan, the general secretary of the ABGL, who was present at the spot.

The “boy” was among the three who had reached Tamang while a mob of 100 rained stones on the others. Pradhan recounts what he saw lying on the ground before a policeman dragged him away…
Things were fine that morning (Friday, May 21) and preparations were almost final. Madandaju asked me to finalise the names of the speakers and inquired when Dawa Sherpa (BJP state secretary) and R.B. Rai (CPRM general secretary) would be arriving.

I told him that RBdaju would be coming soon and that Dawa was supposed to reach the venue by 10am.

I told him that RBdaju would be coming soon and that Dawa was supposed to reach the venue by 10am.

I asked him whether we should include the names of our party leaders from Kalimpong in the speakers’ list. He told me not to and said he would speak for more than two hours.

He was of the belief that R.B. Rai and Dawa Sherpa would not speak for more than 10 minutes each.

With everything settled, I went towards Keventer’s and asked the police constables if they could bring me five patties, and gave one of them Rs 50.

I waited for some time before the policeman returned saying that he could not find any patty. I walked back towards daju and it was then that I heard shouts, and people were running towards us.

We were being pelted with stones and one hit Madandaju on the head. Other stones also landed on some of our supporters. By then, I had almost reached daju.

My bodyguard pulled me from behind and I fell to the ground. Then I, too, was hit by a stone. My immediate reaction was to look at Madandaju who was sitting on the chair. I could hear him tell our supporters not to run.

He was also telling the crowd: “Bhai, listen to me.”At that moment I saw three boys, all of whom were armed with sharp weapons, khukuris and patangs.

One boy, who was in a white T-shirt, hit daju with the sharp weapon and he collapsed on the ground. The boy who hit him was shorter than daju (probably around 5.6 feet). The faces were unknown.

My bodyguard then fired and the mob started retreating. Daju’s bodyguard  also fired and I think the IRB personnel, too, started firing.

I was taken to a passage inside a building by the policemen who did not let me come out.

GJM chief, wife named in Tamang assassination case

Jaswant Singh's wife with Asha Gurung - political vandetta or accused of murder ?!!

FROM TIMES OF INDIA

DARJEELING: Faced with widespread criticism for their alleged inaction, police on Saturday registered cases against Gorkha  Janmukti  Morcha chief Bimal Gurung, his wife and 11 senior GJM leaders for alleged involvement in Friday’s murder of Akhil Bharatiya Gorkha League president  Madan  Tamang in Darjeeling.

The police swung into action on the basis of an FIR lodged by ABGL  general  secretary Laxman Pradhan against GJM top brass a few hours after Tamang’s assassination.

In the FIR he had named Gurung, his wife, Asha, GJM general secretary Roshan Giri, GJM central committee members Harka Bahadur Chhetri, Pradeep Pradhan and Benoy Tamang, and Gorkhaland Personnel (GLP) chief Col (Rtd) Ramesh Allay as “conspirators.” GLP is GJM’s police wing.

In the FIR, Pradhan also named GJM’s sub-divisional leaders, Dinesh  Gurung,  Puran  Thami and Tenzing Khambachay, Gorkha  Janmukti  Yuva Morcha chief Alok Kant Thulung and Gorkha  Janmukti  Vidyarthi  Morcha  leaders, Kismat Chhetri and Keshavraj Pokhrel as the ones who carried out the murder.

“We’ve registered cases under Sections 120B and 302 of IPC against the persons named in the FIR. So far, we’ve detained 45 people in connection with the murder,” North Bengal IGP Kundan Lal Tamta said.

Blood stains on the floor - People grieve at the spot Madan Tamang fell

Locals stage a candlelight rally on Saturday from Darjeeling Mall to the site where Madan Tamang was killed.

The writ of Bimal Gurung and the Gorkha  Janamukti  Morcha  (GJM) did not run in Darjeeling today after the All India Gorkha League (AIGL) president, Madan Tamang, was hacked to death in full public glare yesterday.

The GJM, known for its politics of bandh in the hills, tried to “enforce normalcy” by asking people to keep shops and establishments open on Saturday.

But there was total defiance, as people imposed a near total shutdown in the hills for the second day today. If the public mood in the hills was any indication, the writing in the wall is more than clear.

The killing of Tamang, one of the oldest votaries of a separate state for Gorkhas, has not gone well with the people of the hills. A handful of vehicles plied between Darjeeling and Siliguri ferrying tourists.

Madan Tamang's family in mourning - Darjeeling's deepest condolences !!

Amidst rousing public anger, virtually the entire GJM leadership has left Darjeeling and is camping in Kalimpong. Since early in the morning, thousands of people marched to Tamang’s house. Many wept inconsolably.

The beautiful landscaped house was swamped by mourners even as Tamang’s body was kept in his house and Buddhist monks chanted prayers.

By evening there was yet another round of outpouring of sympathy as a candlelight peace procession was taken out in Darjeeling town. Residents said that Darjeeling witnessed such a “non-political, citizen’s protest and peace march” after 1980.

Schoolchildren, college students, tourists joined the residents in the march that ended at the spot on Upper Club Side Road, where Tamang was hacked to death yesterday.

Meanwhile, Lachman Pradhan, general secretary of the AIGL, lodged an FIR, naming six top leaders of the GJM for the murder of Tamang.

Talking to The Sunday Express, the AIGL secretary said: “Democracy in Darjeeling has been murdered with the killing of Tamang. Normalcy will never return to the hills till we restore the fundamental rights of the people and the freedom to practice any political faith. That will be our tribute to the departed leader.”

Not a single person named in the FIR has been arrested so far, complained Pradhan, accusing the West Bengal government of creating this situation of total lawlessness.

The AIGL leaders, as well as other political circles, ruled out the killing of Tamang as a mere spur-of-the-moment incident.

Senior AIGL leaders pointed out that if it was so, how would one explain the simultaneous attacks on Tamang’s house, on a hotel run by Tamang’s relative and on the house of Dawa Sherpa — a BJP leader who had joined the Democratic Front led by Tamang and R B Rai.

“This is the true face of the present GJM leadership who had been pledging by a democratic, Gandhian principle to achieve their goals but in reality indulged in the politics of bloodshed and suppression,” said an AIGL leader.

“After yesterday’s murder, people of Darjeeling would press for peace and democracy first and statehood later,” said R B Rai, a leader of the Communist Party of Revolutionary Marxists.

Leaders of many other political outfits, from the Trinamool Congress to the CPM, BJP and Darjeeling-Sikkim Unification Manch, assembled at Tamang’s house today and renewed their plans to re-launch an agitation for restoring the rule of law.

There was but one common enemy — the West Bengal Government, for not doing enough to tone up the hill administration and succumbing to the politics of suppression now in vogue in the hills.

“Otherwise, how could one explain why despite early warnings from the intelligence and from the AIGL, the police did not take adequate steps to protect Tamang during the public rally?” asked many.

The IG, North Bengal, K L Tamta, admitted that six senior GJM leaders have been named in the FIR lodged by the secretary of AIGL. The police have detained about 45 people so far.

Senior GJM leader Benoy Tamang said the FIR lodged by the AIGL naming top party leaders was an indication that there was a “pre-planned conspiracy” to defame the GJM leaders.
