NEW DELHI, Sunday, 18 July 2010 22:14: Indian striker Sunil Chhetri’s Major League Soccer debut may not be too far away as his club Kansas City Wizards on Thursday said he will be soon included in the 18-man match-day squad.

Chhetri signed for KC Wizards in late March and has made his debut for the Kansas-based side in the Lamar Hunt US Open match against Colorado Rapids in April. He is yet to make his debut in MLS, which is halfway through this season.

“Hopefully he will be able to make the 18-man active roster sometime in the coming weeks,” KC Wizards Public Relations Officer Dave Borchardt said.

Chhetri has also a chance to play against the likes of Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, Dimitar Berbatov and Edwin Van der Sar in KC Wizards friendly match against Manchester United on July 25.

“The teams (KC Wizards and Manchester United) are still finalising how many players will be available for the game day roster as well as how many substitutions will be allowed,” he said when asked about Chhetri playing against Manchester United.

KC Wizards are now placed fifth in the eight-team Eastern Conference of the MLS with 15 points from 15 matches. They have won four, lost eight and drawn three.

Manchester United have confirmed that star players Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, Darren Fletcher, Dimitar Berbatov and Edwin Van der Sar will play in the friendly at KC Wizards newly renovated Arrowhead Stadium on July 25.

July 17, 2010: During the broadcast of the game against Colorado yesterday Wizards President Robb Heineman confirmed about Sunil Chhetri’s participation in the upcoming match against Manchester United on the 25th July.

Chhetri will be one of the first Indian footballers to play against the famed Manchester United, one of the topmost professional football clubs in the world.

There is also an added excitement among the Gorkhas in India and abroad about Chettri’s participation in the coming match against Manchester United on 25th July.

Some of the most notable names in the Manchester United roster presently are Wayne Rooney, Fabio, Rafael among others.

New Delhi: India captain Bhaichung Bhutia, will be heading back home from national team’s training camp, in Portugal, on Friday.

It has been learnt that Indian captain, who missed training for the past couple of days due to fever, is suffering from thyroid problems. According to reliable sources, the national team will miss Bhaichung’s services during the international friendlies, scheduled in September.

The team, coached by Bob Houghton, is currently in Viera for a month-long training camp as a part of their preparations for the Asian Cup final round in Doha next year.

“The captain was doing well initially, but has suddenly developed fever,” said a source. “There has also been a recurrence of thyroid problems due to which he has lost five kilos. He is very weak and has been advised rest. He will only join the national team during the next camp in November,” the source added.

Some of the other senior players are also suffering from injuries. Senior midfielder Climax Lawrence is yet to recover from an ankle injury while defender Samir Naik, too, has missed training because of a calf muscle problem.
