Malda, Aug. 16: Nineteen-year-old Priya Sanyal today visited her in-laws at Pirojpur after police assured her that she and her husband would be protected from her family if they were harassed.
Priya, the only daughter of a local contractor-cum-businessman Pankaj Sanyal, married Mohammed Aziz, who runs a shop selling automobile parts, on January 25 within a year of returning to Malda from Dehra Dun. The girl was a student of a school in Dehra Dun.
In 2009, Priya got admitted to a private English school here in Class XI and started seeing Aziz against her parents’ wishes.
When the news of Priya’s marriage spread, the couple fled the town on May 15. Before leaving the town, she had written to chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, the chief secretary, home secretary and the director-general of police.
“I have married Aziz on my own. If my in-laws are harassed by my parents and implicated in false cases, there would be another Rizwanur-like incident,” the letter reads. A copy of the letter was also sent to district police chief Bhuban Mondal.
The police visited Aziz’s house several times. Aziz’s elder brother Mohammed Abhi met additional district superintendent of police Kalyan Mukherjee on Friday. “We have assured Abhi that his brother and sister-in-law could return home safely. The police will take care of their safety,” Mukherjee said.
Today, Aziz and Priya met Mondal. After the 15-minute meeting, Priya said: “We are happy. The police chief has assured us of protection.” Mondal said the couple had been apprehending lack of security. “We have told them not to worry.”
