Siliguri youths drown
Siliguri, Aug. 17: Two youths from the Fuleswari Bazar area drowned in the Kortowa river at Ambari near here this afternoon.
The bodies of Manik Das, 25, and Ananda Sutradhar, 26, were recovered by people who were fishing in the river. The two had gone to Ambari, 20km from Siliguri, with four others to bathe in the river. Ambari police said although local people had tried to save the youths, they went under water and the bodies were found sometime later. While Sutradhar was a carpenter, Das was unemployed.
Raiganj: The Raiganj municipality has set up complaint boxes in which residents can post their suggestions for improving the civic services. Chairperson of the Congress-run municipality Mohit Sengupta said the boxes would be installed at 11 important points across the town. The civic body has also formed a seven-member committee to look into the suggestions.
Siliguri: A minor landslide occurred on Tuesday morning on NH31A at Hatisuray, around 30km from here, disrupting traffic between Siliguri and Sikkim and Kalimpong for a couple of hours. BRO officials said the traffic resumed at 9am.
Islampur: The outpatients department of the Lodhan block health centre in Islampur subdivision reopened on Tuesday after an all-party meeting was held by subdivisional officer Partha Ghosh. The centre had been closed by doctors and employees on Friday after they were assaulted allegedly by villagers for not attending to an injured patient.
