The two-day celebration starts on the 15th day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar every year.
It started in Gangtok on Monday.
3 hurt in clash with RPF
Malda, Aug. 24: Passengers of a New Jalpaiguri-bound train came to blows with RPF personnel on board this morning when they protested the men in uniform allowing goods inside a compartment, allegedly for bribes by detaining the train.
Three persons on the 661 Up Malda-New Jalpaiguri passenger train suffered injuries when the RPF beat them up for photographing with their cellphones the personnel taking bribes. Trouble started around 9am when the RPF men allowed fish to be loaded by detaining the train at Malda Town station. Angry passengers blocked the track in protest. Train services resumed around 11am after the GRP promised action against the guilty RPF men.
Cooch Behar: Members of the India Bangladesh Enclave Exchange Coordination Committee organised iftar and rakhi at Mashaldanga, a Bangladeshi enclave, 45km from here, on Tuesday. Around 500 people participated in the event.
Balurghat: The north Bengal unit of the West Bengal Civil Service (Executive) Officers’ Association has threatened to go on mass leave indefinitely if the district authorities fail to arrest within a week three officials who had allegedly embezzled over Rs 1 crore meant for a rural job scheme. The threat comes after the BDO of Harirampur, Suman Majhi, was arrested on his way to Calcutta on the same charges on August 13. “But the district administration took no initiative to arrest the three others involved in the alleged scam,” vice-president of the association Dibyendu Das said after a meeting of WBCS officers here on Tuesday.
Siliguri: The Northeast Frontier Railway has decided to withdraw the 0547/0548 Dibrugarh-Katihar weekly special train from September 6.
Jaigaon: Classes were not held at Parimal Mitra Mahavidyalaya in Malbazar on Tuesday following a strike by the SFI-led student union on Monday. The protesters were demanding regular classes, library and separate common rooms for boys and girls.
