ACCIDENT WATCH: NH31A claims one life, Kalimpong census reports damaged – census to be retaken or copies available ?!!
Kalimpong, 11 Sep 2010: A pick up van carrying official documents fell off the NH31 A near Birrik Danra killing one. According to police sources, in the night of 10 September 2010 at about 11.p.m a pick up van WB 73B-4646 skidded and fell off the road about 250ft down in the valley towards River Teesta near Birrik Danra due to heavy rainfall.
The driver cum owner of the van, Bholanath Basak died on the spot while the other three passengers suffered from minor injuries.
They were rescued by the Rambi police Station and rushed to Rambi Block Primary Health Center. One was discharged after the first aid while the other two were discharged today.
Rambi PP Incharge Dipen Tamang said that the pickup van was carrying the census report of Kalimpong subdivision. Most of the boxes and its contents loaded in the van were damaged due to heavy rainfall while only a few boxes carrying the documents were recovered and found intact.
The body of the driver was sent to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital for postmortem. A source confirmed that the van having assigned the contract for collecting census report all over the country belonged to TCI Express Courier Services.
