Special train

The exhibition train, Mother Express, displaying the life, work and message of Mother Teresa, will be stationed at Dimapur. The exhibition will be open from 8am.

Floral tribute to Bodo leader

Kokrajhar: Floral tributes were paid to late Binai Khunghur Basumatari, the former MLA of Udalguri Legislative Assembly constituency, on the premises of the Bishnu Rabha Kristi Sangha by the residents of the district on Sunday. More than 100 social, political, literary and students’ organisations paid tribute to the leader and observed a minute’s silence. Basumatary passed away at GNRC Hospitals, Guwahati, at 8.30am on Saturday. He was 71. He represented the Udalguri Assembly constituency in the Assembly three times from 1978 to 1991.

Train death

Dhubri: An unidentified middle-aged man died in the spot when he was hit by a train at Kukarmara railway crossing between Kamakhya-Jogighopa railway section on Saturday.


Guwahati: A suspected KLNLF militant died in an encounter with security forces at Napak Ghat under Dakmuka police station in Karbi Anglong district on Saturday night.

AGP demand

Dhubri: The AGP on Sunday demanded that the Rajdhani Express should stop at Rangia to cater the needs of passengers.

Houses gutted

Guwahati: Properties worth several lakhs of rupees were destroyed when a candle factory, one godown and 12 small houses were gutted in a fire at Bhootnath in the wee hours on Sunday. An LPG cylinder blast is suspected to have caused the fire.


Guwahati: Utpal Deka and Kandarpa Singha of Bongaigaon died on the spot when the motorcycle they were riding collided head-on with a truck at Azara on Sunday morning.


Guwahati: Pranjit Rabha, 36, was electrocuted after he came in contact with a live wire at his Kahilipara residence and his brother brother Monoj was also electrocuted while trying to save him. Both of them were were pronounced dead at hospital.


Guwahati: Assistant professor of Assam University, Diphu Ramie Husneara Begum, will attend two international conferences on Salmonella in Switzerland and Italy from October 3 to 9.


Assault case cop

Hyderabad, 26 Sept. (PTI): A police constable and a home guard in Hyderabad were arrested for allegedly attempting to sexually assault a nursing student, police said.

The 25-year-old woman’s father, a pastor, lodged a complaint yesterday alleging that constable Vijay Kumar and home guard Narsingh Rao tried to sexually assault his daughter when she was alone at home. The woman later informed her father about the incident.

Maoists killed

Ranchi: Two Maoist rebels and a Cobra jawan were killed in an encounter in Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum district on Sunday. With the death of Cobra constable Jaimal Singh, the number of security personnel killed in the Saranda forest since Saturday has risen to three. The firing started when police and paramilitary personnel were combing the area for bodies of rebels and a district police jawan killed in the previous day’s encounter. The police recovered two landmines. In the last two days, the Naxalites have triggered 18 landmine blasts.

Paper leak

Mumbai: The CBI claims to have busted a defence recruitment racket with the arrest of four persons, among them two naval officers. They had allegedly leaked a question paper for an exam to fill up 175 posts for clerks.

Fake notes

Hyderabad (PTI): Five persons from Bengal were arrested for allegedly circulating counterfeit currency in Hyderabad. Fake notes of Rs 1.33 lakh were seized from them. The five accused hail from Malda district. They had reached Hyderabad a few days ago to circulate the fake currency, police said.
