FROM THE TELEGRAPH CORRESPONDENT
Siliguri, Oct. 1: A sales representative was shot dead a little after noon in the heart of Jalpaiguri town today, allegedly by a 60-year-old coal depot owner who then sped away on a motorbike.
Police and family members of Sudipta Saha, a 25-year old resident of Maskalaibari in Jalpaiguri, said they were yet to find the motive behind the murder. Saha was a sales representative of a private telecom network.
“It seems that he was shot from a close range and died on the spot. We have started investigation. The motive behind the murder is yet to be ascertained, as the main accused Nishar Biswas, a local businessman, is absconding,” said Anant Kumar, the superintendent of police of Jalpaiguri district.
Pallab Das, a resident of the area, saw Nishar flee on the bike.
“Nishar was holding a gun and running towards his motorbike, which sped away towards Siliguri. We also found the youth lying on the road in a pool of blood,” he said.
Das and his friends took Saha to Jalpaiguri district hospital, 3km away, where he was declared brought-dead.
Biswas has a coal depot and stays with wife at Maskalaibari itself. The couple did not have many acquaintances in the locality, neighbours said. After the firing, Biswas’s house appeared locked from inside.
