Siliguri, Oct. 3: The management of Carron Tea Estate, the Calcutta-based Basu Tea Limited, has announced indefinite suspension of work at the garden yesterday, following the assault on its staff on Friday morning.
“We had told the workers about the management’s inability to pay the bonus at one go, but they attacked me and our factory manager without any provocation,” manager Amiyo Dutta said.
Siliguri: The GRP found 13 skulls and 42 bones in a sack on Platform 1 of Siliguri junction on Sunday afternoon. The skulls were found inside an unclaimed sack during a special checking going on since October 1.
Alipurduar: Somnath Das, 25, drowned in a pond inside a private resort in Chilapata forest on Sunday when he went to take bath. Abhishek Halder, 27, who had gone along with Das, has been admitted to the Alipurduar hospital. Das and Halder, both from Howrah, had checked in on Saturday.
PLA militant, accomplice held
jorhat: Police arrested a cadre of the Peoples Liberation Army, Kharibam Amarjit, 24, who was involved in the killing of a non-Manipuri and shooting another migrant in and around Imphal city in two separate incidents last month and his accomplice, Maisnam Jugindro, 47, from Imphal East district, early on Sunday morning.
Jorhat: The Assam Chamber of Commerce, Jorhat, has condemned the attack on a trader and his shop at Nirmal Chariali, Jorhat, on Saturday by students of Institute of Science and Technology and has demanded compensation.
Shillong: Taxi drivers here have threatened to resort to agitation if the Meghalaya government failed to meet their demand for an increase in fare. The East Khasi Hills Taxi Welfare Association president, M.A. Pohshna, said the government has not increased taxi fare in many years and its time for a hike.
Jorhat: A cyclist was killed in an accident on National Highway 37 at Teok on Sunday night after a Winger coming from Dibrugarh hit the cyclist. Five passengers were injured and admitted to Teok first referral hospital.
