Congress member killed
Malda, Oct. 10: A 35-year-old Congress supporter was killed by criminals who had barged into his house in Sujapur last night.
Sujapur MLA Abu Naser Khan Chowdhury alleged that criminals backed by the CPM had shot Nitu Sheikh and hacked him to death. He said the CPM has embarked on the politics of murder in his constituency to make inroads into an area where it had no existence. The CPM district secretary, Jiban Moitra, said the murder was the result of a turf war between two groups of “anti-socials”. The police said Sheikh was involved in the murder of one Ghuran Sheikh several years back and had spent time in jail. The law enforcers suspect that a rival gang was behind Sheikh’s murder.
Siliguri: State urban development minister Asok Bhattacharya inaugurated an over bridge at Siliguri Junction here on Sunday evening. The bridge, constructed jointly by the Silguri Jalpaiguri Development Authority and North East Frontier Railway at a cost of Rs 7 crore, connects Hill Cart Road with Ward 47 of Siliguri Municipal Corporation.
Balurghat: Two women were robbed of their ornaments and new clothes worth nearly Rs 1.40 lakh in a Balurghat-bound train on Friday. They alleged that the railways and police had refused to register their complaints in the absence of a GRP post.
Balurghat: Hili police arrested Mukesh Thakur, a resident of Jodhpur in Rajasthan, with gems worth Rs 10 lakh on Saturday night. He had allegedly fled with the gems from a jewellry shop he was employed in Jodhpur.
Students slam border row
Dibrugarh: A joint meeting of two influential students’ organisations, the Assam Students Union and the All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union, convened by the North East Students Union at Charaipung in Sivasagar district on Sunday came down heavily on the alleged negligence of the Centre and the state in finding a permanent solution to the inter-state border problem. The meeting was chaired by Nesu president Samujjal Bhattacharyya.

Nagaon: Jakhalabandha police arrested a KNLF cadre from Ahutoli Silimkhowa from the Nagaon-Karbi Anglong border on Sunday.
Dhubri: Eight-year-old Kamala Malo, daughter of Rajkumar Malo of Chalantapara, succumbed to her injuries on the way to hospital on Sunday after being hit by a van on NH-31 (B) near her residence at Chalantapara.
Dhubri: An Ulfa cadre, Chandan Kalita, 24, was arrested by the BSF at Mancachar on Sunday.
