Teacher found dead
Malda, Oct. 15: A primary schoolteacher was found dead with blood and injuries on the body at his two-storied house in East Sarbamangalapally here this morning.
Police suspect that the 36-year-old Sunanda Chakraborty, who was a teacher at a school in Adina near here, was murdered. The body was lying on the first-floor of the house with blood all over his body, injury on the head and black spots on the forehead. While Sunanda uses the first-floor, his mother Manju, a retired schoolteacher, stays on the ground floor. Neighbours said Sunanda was a habitual drunk and there were differences between Manju and his wife Archana, who had been staying at her father’s home in Puratuli, also in Malda, with her children for the past two days. The police have started investigation.
Balurghat: Bideshi Modi, 58, a resident of Balarampur village near Harirampur and the husband of a self-proclaimed witch doctor Bishni Modi, was bludgeoned to death by Gaju Modi. Police said Gaju was under Bishni’s “treatment” and attacked him without provocation. Gaju has been arrested.
Islampur: Islampur police caught seven suspected thieves and seized an MUV from them on NH31 on Thursday evening. Police said they had assembled with sharp weapons with an intention to commit a robbery when they were arrested. Five of them are residents of Dalkhola, while two are from Katihar in Bihar.
Fake note trail
Malda: A six-member police team from Andhra Pradesh reached here on Friday to investigate a case of fake currency. Additional superintendent of police of Malda Kalyan Mukherjee said the team, led by an inspector, would visit places like Kaliachak and Manikchak for investigation.
Jalpaiguri: Members of the Jalpaiguri district committee of the West Bengal Government Employees’ Federation (Unified) on Thursday launched a campaign on the need to protect wildlife and the Karala river that cuts across Jalpaiguri town.
Man dies in mishap
Dhubri, Oct. 15: Sixty-year-old, Kachua Sheikh of Pallirtol village, died on the spot while four women were injured when the autorickshaw they were travelling in overturned at Chalantapara of Bongaigaon district yesterday. An aggrieved mob damaged the autorickshaw and handed over the driver, who was driving without a licence, to Jogighopa police.
Dhubri: An employee of Dhubri district rural development agency, Mijanur Rahman, was suspended for his alleged involvement in abduction of two minors from Mancachar while they were on their way to school on September 24.
Dhubri: The BSF apprehended a Bangla-deshi, Aminur Rahman, at Lakhimari in Dhubri district on Thursday. After preliminary interrogation, he was handed over to Golokganj police.
