Child’s body in orchard
Malda, Oct. 22: The body of a seven-year-old girl was found in a Ratua village today with police suspecting that the Class II student was raped before she was strangled to death.
Sources said fisherman Subhash Choudhury filed a missing person’s diary with Ratua police yesterday when his daughter disappeared from Rukundipur village where the family stays. This morning, some local youths who had gone to the orchard spotted the body. Malda district police chief Bhuban Mondal said the girl was suspected to have been raped before murder, apparently by strangulation.
Blast kills 2
Balurghat: Two workers of a private rice mill at Fulbari died and two others were injured when the boiler of the mill exploded on Friday. Both the deceased — Bangru Tirkey, 32, and Jhantu Tirkey, 26, — are residents of Fulbari. The accident occurred while a new machine was being installed in the mill. The mill owner is missing. The injured are under treatment at the Gangarampur subdivisional hospital.
Cooch Behar: Thirty-two Bangladeshi inmates of the Cooch Behar district jail have been on an indefinite hunger strike since Wednesday, demanding their release. They were admitted to MJN Hospital on Friday after their health condition deteriorated. Jail sources said the inmates were desperate to go back to their country since they had completed their jail sentences. District magistrate Smaraki Mahapatra has been apprised of the hunger strike and the physical condition of the inmates.
Siliguri: Members of Himalayan Camera Club will organise their first photography exhibition at Ramkinkar Hall in Dinabandhu Mancha here on Sunday. The exhibition will be inaugurated by Siliguri mayor Gangotri Dutta and will continue till Monday.
Jaigaon: A cyber café at Malbazar was burgled late on Thursday night. Police said the robbers broke the front door and fled with two laptops, a digital camera and Rs 12,000.
4 killed in clash
Nagaon, Oct. 22: Four persons, Hazarat Ali, Yunus Ali, Badiur Jaman and Mafiqual Islam, were killed in a clash at Satian Balizan under Juria police station in Nagaon last night. Nagaon additional superintendent of police (headquarters) Amrit Bhuyan said the incident was a fallout of a yearlong dispute over land between two families. We have reports that an eight-member gang of men hired by one of the families attacked four members of Youns Ali’s family. Our efforts are on to apprehend the killers,” a police official said. Two persons have been pic-ked up for interrogation.
Imphal: The United Naga Council called a total bandh from 6am to 6pm on Monday in Ukhrul, Tamenglong and Chandel districts in support of the NSCN (I-M) talks and also to expedite the peace process.
Aizawl (PTI): The prime suspect in the rape and murder of a five-year-old girl at Thakthing, Lalrammawia, was arrested on Wednesday, Aizawl superintendent of police Lalbiakthanga Khiangte said on Friday. The man was produced in court and remanded in judicial custody.
