Woman killed for dowry

Islampur, Oct. 24: A housewife, Mokhtara Khatun, was strangled to death allegedly by her husband Md Majnu for dowry at Dimti village near Islampur last night. Majnu has been arrested.

Police said Md Islamuddin, Mokhtara’s father, had filed a complaint saying his son-in-law used to torture her regularly for dowry. Islamuddin also said Majnu had wanted land as dowry. Majnu married Mokhtara in 2004 and the couple have a four-year-old son.


Islampur: The body of Annu Yogi, 22, a resident of Rampur near Chakulia, was exhumed on Sunday for post-mortem. Annu’s father Sibnath Yogi alleged that she died on October 19 after being hit by a train but her in-laws had buried the body without informing him or police.

Garden meet

Jaigaon: Nilkamal Biswas, the subdivisional officer of Malbazar, has called a tripartite meeting on Tuesday to end the lock-out at Carron Tea Estate. The garden was locked out on October 2 following an alleged assault on the managerial staff by workers the previous day.

Gaur attack

Jaigaon: Sonam Lama suffered injuries on his head and left leg when a gaur attacked him at Totopara in Birpara-Madarihat block on Sunday morning. The 17-year-old boy was relieving himself when he was attacked by the animal which had come out of nearby Lankapara forest. Sonam was brought to Madarihat Block Hospital and then referred to the MJN Hospital in Cooch Behar.

Siliguri: Table tennis player Subhajit Saha and archers Dola Banerjee and Rahul Banerjee — all have bagged gold at the Commonwealth Games — will be felicitated by the Siliguri Jalpaiguri Development Authority and state sports and youth affairs department here on Monday. Table tennis player Mantu Ghosh and Subhajit’s coach Amit Dam will also be felicitated at a function at Kanchenjungha Stadium. Minister Asok Bhattacharya and footballer Bhaichung Bhutia will be present on the occasion.

Workers stage 3-hr silent dharna

kokrajhar: The Multi Purpose Workers, contractually engaged by the District Health Society under the health department in the four districts of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), on Sunday staged a three-hour silent demonstration in front of Central Selection Board (CSB) office in Kokrajhar. They demanded regularisation of jobs, even as the board conducted a written examination for the posts of workers on the same day.


jorhat: The Numaligarh Refinery Limited energy station, managed by the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) in Jorhat, has got DNV (Det Norske Verita) Class I station certification for conforming to norms of DNV assessment protocol standard for right quality and quantity of products dispensed.

Train timings

Guwahati: The NF Railway on Sunday rescheduled the timings of some trains from Guwahati railway station on Monday. According to the new timings, the 2505 Guwahati-New Delhi North East Express will leave at 3.30pm instead of 9.45am and the 5651 Guwahati-Jammu Tawi Amarnath Express will leave at 9pm instead of 1.15pm.

Rebel held

Guwahati: The army on Sunday apprehended an NDFB cadre, Sugan Daimary alias Thelka, at Rowta in Udalguri district. The jawans seized a pistol, explosives and extortion notes of the outfit.
