Nathula, Nov 2: The upper reaches of Sikkim in Nathu-la at 14,400ft and the Sherathang trade mart and Chhangu village at 12,500ft received the season’s first snowfall in the state on Tuesday.
Snow of two-three inch thickness covered the areas in East Sikkim which has considerable tourists at this time of the year.
In 2009, Sikkim received its first snowfall in December. The snowfall began around midnight and lasted till 9am on Tuesday, said M. Das, the resident meteorologist of the Gangtok met department.
Nathu-la and its surroundings receive snowfall from November to February each winter. Das said the minimum temperature in Gangtok on Monday was 11 degrees Celsius and the maximum, 15.6 degrees Celsius.

Guwahati: The NF Railway on Tuesday informed that a traffic block would be held for traffic renewal work in Dharmanagar, Agartala from November 7 to April 6, 2011.
Guwahati: Chandmari police arrested five extortionists from Silpukhuri area when they came to collect extortion money from a senior executive of a private company on Tuesday. Police said that the accused had demanded Rs. 40,000 from one Rajiv Ranjan, a senior executive of PPL Company, on Monday.
They were apprehended when they came to the company’s Silpukhuri office today in a Mahindra Scorpio (without a number plate) to collect the money. The accused were identified as Nitu Malakar, Monoj Deka, Lokeswar Das, Monoj Rabha Ramchiary and Niren Mahanta. One toy pistol was recovered from them and the Scorpio was seized by police.
