Pay-up assault on jawan – charity by brute violence, now a Bengal culture ?!!
Malda, Nov. 5: A CISF jawan was beaten up severely after he refused to pay Rs 500 as subscription for a Kali puja at Habibpur last night. Two of his relatives who had come to his rescue were also beaten up.
Arun Biswas had arrived at Malda station from Chhattisgarh, where he is posted, around 9pm yesterday. He was on way to his father-in-law’s house in a car when some youths approached him and demanded Rs 500 as subscription. When he refused, he was dragged out of the car and beaten up.
District superintendent of police Bhuban Mondal said two youths of a local club at Habibpur were arrested. The residents of the area today put up a blockade on the Malda-Nalagola state highway near Kendua from 9am, demanding the release of the youths. They were dispersed by the police around 12 noon.
Siliguri: To check traffic and the rush of pandal-hoppers during Kali Puja and Diwali, Siliguri police imposed restrictions on vehicular movement on Hill Cart Road, Sevoke Road and Bidhan Road, from 4pm to 4am on November 5 and 6. Five police assistance booths under Pradhannagar and Siliguri police stations have been set up along these roads. Police said all idols would have to be immersed by November 8.
Siliguri: The GRP of New Jalpaiguri station recovered the body of Swapan Kanjilal, a 36-year-old resident of Shantinagar, from along the railway track near Sahudangi on Friday. GRP personnel suspect that Swapan committed suicide on the tracks. The body has been sent for post-mortem.
Islampur: Karandighi police arrested 18 gamblers from different areas of North Dinajpur in a pre-Diwali raid on Thursday. Police have also recovered Rs 4,500 as board money from them.
Islampur: A 14-year-old girl from Khunia has been missing since Thursday evening when she went to visit her relative at Ramganj. Chan Ali, her father, lodged a missing person’s diary on Friday.
Man run over
Kokrajhar, Nov. 5: A speeding goods train ran over an unidentified man, around 30-years-old, near Santinagar railway crossing gate, west of Kokrajhar railway station in Kokrajhar around 1pm. Sources said the man was coming on foot from the west gate.
Guwahati: The All Assam Students Union has called for a satyagraha on November 16 in Guwahati to protest against the Centre and the state government’s failure to update the NRC, implement the Assam Accord and failure to provide the indigenous people with constitutional safeguards. The students’ organisation has also called for a mass gathering in Guwahati on November 20 on the issue of NRC update.
Guwahati: Assam PCC president Bhubaneswar Kalita left for New York on Friday to participate in the ongoing 65th session of the United Nation’s general Assembly. Kalita also met UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi before his departure.
B>n Itanagar (PTI): Unidentified persons attempted to abduct two engineers of Gammon India Ltd on Wednesday, a fortnight after an abortive attempt to kidnap the company’s project-in-charge in East Kameng district, police said on Friday. A case was registered with Seppa police station.
Dhubri: A CID team from Guwahati arrested Monoarul Pradhani and Aminur Islam of Dharmasala village in Dhubri on Thursday night on charges of alleged forgery and cheating.
