Comrade shot dead
Malda, Nov. 9: Unsa Haque, a CPM member, was shot dead by motorcycle-borne criminals near Harishchandrapur this evening.
Police said Haque, 45, and his son, Alam Sheikh, were also on a motorcycle, going home from Harishchandrapur, 90km from here. Around 7am, they were stopped by criminals on three motorcycles and Haque was shot point blank on the stomach. He was taken to the Harishchandrapur hospital from where he was referred to the district hospital. Haque died on the way to Malda. The motive behind the murder is not yet known.
Siliguri: An office of the National Small Industries Corporation was opened here recently. Officials said on Tuesday that the department, a central government undertaking, would work for development and financing of small scale and micro enterprises in the region.
Islampur: Chopra police seized fake rectified spirit (used in making liquor) at Kalagach on Tuesday. Police said Bijoy Gupta, a resident of Salbari on the outskirts of Siliguri, was carrying the fake spirit from Bihar in an MUV. When he was asked to stop at a police picket on NH31 in Islampur, he dodged the speed breakers, prompting the law enforcers to chase him. He was nabbed at Kalagach. The vehicle was also seized.
Alipurduar: Monoranjan Debnath, a 45-year-old patient, went missing from the subdivisional hospital here on Tuesday. Debnath, a resident of Kamakhyaguri, had been admitted to the hospital with stomach ache on Monday. When his wife Krishna came to meet him on Tuesday morning, she could not find him.
Siliguri: The East Himalayan Expo 2010, to be organised by the Indian Trade Promotion Organisation and the Federation of Chamber of Commerce and Industries, North Bengal, will begin at Paribahan Nagar in Matigara on December 10.
Jorhat, Nov. 9: A three-month-old elephant calf (in Telegraph picture above) was caught at Borsala gaon in Sivasagar district today. It was later handed over to the forest department.
Jorhat: Alina Begum and Imrul Akthar Hussain were arrested from mgurighat in Sivasagar district on Tuesday for dealing in fake currency.
Dhubri: New Dhubri deputy commissioner Sunil Dutta, who took charge on Monday, promised to look into the problems and grievances of the people while addressing a news meet on Tuesday.
Dibrugarh: Drug peddler Ilahi Sheikh escaped from his Kalibari residence during a police raid on Tuesday evening while Roshan Alam was arrested with 20gm of brown sugar.
Dhubri: Ranjit Kumar Roy, joint-secretary of All Assam Koch-Rajbongshi Samelan, was injured in a road mishap at Tamarhat Bazar in Dhubri district on Monday night.
