Woman held with Rs 2 lakh

Siliguri, Nov.11: A woman suspected to have stolen Rs 2 lakh from an old lady earlier this month was arrested from Bagdogra last night. The amount has been recovered from her.

Police said Swati Roy of Bhujiapani has confessed to her crime. “Rajkumar Mondal, of Baghajatin Colony, had sold an autorickshaw for Rs 2.79 lakh on November 4. After the deal, he was returning home with his mother on an autorickshaw. On reaching home they found that the money his mother was carrying was missing,” said a senior police official from Pradhannagar. Swati, who was also in the same three-wheeler had asked Mondal’s mother to check if anything had fallen in her eyes. The old woman had checked her eyes before getting off the autorickshaw. Later, a raid on Swati’s house yielded Rs 2.12 lakh. S. Sinha, the deputy SP, said Swati had criminal past.

‘Couple’ dead

Malda: A youth and a woman were found hanging from a tree in a mango orchard in Kaliachak on Thursday morning. Kanak Mondal, 22, used to work in Mumbai as a labourer and Shantana Mondal, 18, was a student of Class XI in Kaliachak Girls’ High School. The local people suspect that the girl had fled her house on Wednesday night after she heard that a family would come to meet her parents to finalise her marriage. Shantana’s mother Anjali said Kanak and Shantana were in love. After spotting the bodies, the locals informed the police who came four hours later. Angry residents of the area surrounded the police jeep protesting the late arrival. Later, a force led by inspector-in-charge of Kaliachak police station arrived at the spot and took away the bodies.

Bar arrest

Siliguri: Bhaktinagar police arrested three persons from Sevoke Road on Wednesday night when they tried to enter a bar forcibly. Police said Binit Saha and Suman Kundu of Hakimpara and Puran Bhitrakoti, the driver of the car in which they came, asked the staff to open the bar for them. When the employees refused saying that the shop was shut, the trio tried to attack them. Police said the men had gone to the bar with a vehicle that had a beacon fixed on it along with a sticker of a state government department.

Platinum jubilee

Kokrajhar, Nov. 11: The platinum jubilee celebration and 35th general conference of the All Assam Tribal Sangha began today at Tangla College in Asam’s Udalguri district. The programmes will continue for three days.

Multa activist

Dhubri: The BSF apprehended a Multa activist, Moijuddin Haque, 25, while manning the Indo-Bangladesh border in Ghewmari village on Thursday. A 9mm pistol and one round of ammunition was recovered from the Multa activist, a police source said.

Body found

Dhubri: An unidentified body of a 45-year-old man was recovered from Beltoli under Abhayapuri police station of Bongaigaon district on Wednesday night. The body was kept in the morgue for 72hours after post mortem, police said.

More rice

Jorhat: The food and civil supplies department has allotted an additional ration of 2.054kg rice to BPL card holders living in villages, 5kg rice to BPL card holders living in towns and 1.5kg rice to above poverty line card holders in Jorhat district over and above the allotted amount.
